The Many Benefits of Capsicum/Cayenne May Surprise You!

From weight loss to cholesterol, the many benefits of Capsicum (also known as cayenne) may very well surprise you!  They did me!  After reading an article on how Cayenne can curb cravings, leading to weight loss, I had to do some research on this issue.  We sell Capsicum/Cayenne practically on a daily basis at the store so I asked some of our wonderful customers why they were taking the supplement & pretty much everyone had a different reason.  There’s no surprise there due to the fact that herbal supplements have so many different benefits!

Some Of The Reasons For Taking Capsicum/Cayenne Are:

1.  Weight lossFights cravings & helps to release certain proteins that shrink fat cells (I’m impressed)! Capsicum/cayenne increases the liver enzymes accountable for fat metabolism & decreases the fat deposits in the liver caused by a high fat diet.  In short, it increases the speed of fat metabolism ( Thermogenesis).

2.  Cholesterol- Improves the ratio of (HDL) cholesterol, good cholesterol,  which has a protective effect on (LDL) cholesterol, bad cholesterol, (which increases the risk of heart disease).

3.  Alcohol AddictionCapsicum/Cayenne reduces blood vessel dilation which helps your body to stop their addiction to alcohol.

4.  Toothaches

5.  VisionIt is very high in vitamin A, which is essential for your eyes.

6.  Increases Blood Flow & CirculationIt increases the heart action without increasing blood pressure.

7.  Flu & ColdsSpeeds recovery time.  Helps with fluid on the lungs, congestion and coughs.

8.  Ulcers - Heals ulcers in the cell structures fo the arteries, veins, and capillaries.  Heals an ulcerated stomach and may be used as poultice for any inflammation.

9.  Digestion - Influences the flow of digestive secretions from salivary, gastric, and intestinal glands.  When taken with meals – it promotes secretion of all of the organs, aiding in the digestion process.

Suffering From Heartburn?

Suffer from heartburn?  You are not alone.  Millions of Americans deal with it everyday!  Heartburn hurts.  Doctors call this problem gastroesophageal reflux which occurs when a valve at the bottom of the esophagus, the tube that leads to the stomach, weakens.  This allows stomach acid to reflux or flow back into the esophagus, causing the burning of heartburn.

Some take OTC medicines for it (tums, etc) and some are taking prescription medicines for it.  My husband has tried both & unfortunately still suffers on a daily basis.  You know the symptoms, bloating, belching and even stomach pain.  Enough is Enough!  I am tired of seeing him suffer.  There has to be a better way to treat this problem, right?

YES it is!

After doing some research on the matter this is what I found…

First of all I checked in with Dr. Oz (of course!) and he did a segment suggesting Aloe Vera Juice for FAST relief (fast is good!).

Aloe Vera Juice is a natural acid buffer.

He also spoke about Apple Cider Vinegar as a natural remedy for acid reflux (not for people who have ulcers).

Next, I checked out some info from a naturopathic point of view and found out the following….

Some doctors claim that antacids may interfere with your body’s natural digestive process.  Taking antacids on a daily basis can also interfere with digestion in the small intestine and the entire length of the digestive tract.  This will cause your body to have problems with the natural ability to absorb nutrients.  If your body can’t absorb nutrients then your health could decline (Whew! That’s all anyone needs, more problems!)

Okay, so back to the naturopathic point of view… Recommendation of the Aloe Vera Juice &

Apple Cider Vinegar (just like Dr. Oz said) and other alternatives were Licorice and Slippery Elm.

Licorice is simply a natural antacid.  It may also protect against the possible formation of some ulcers.

Slippery Elm heals the mucous membranes.  This is a pretty cool thing!  Slippery Elm helps relieve the symptoms of acid indigestion because it heals the mucous membranes that have been irritated or injured by acid reflux.  Suggested dosage – take one capsule before each meal.

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane) is the supplement that strengthens the lining of the esophagus, protecting it from stomach acid.

Always check with your doctor first.

As for my hubby, he is ready to try the Apple Cider Vinegar remedy!  (He isn’t a pill/supplement kind of person!)

Did You Know That Some Supplements Can Interfere With Your Diabetes Medication?

Chances are your reading this post because you or someone you love is diabetic.  The following list of supplements need to be approved by a healthcare provider so you can be assured that they won’t interfere with prescribed medicine for diabetes.

1.  Ginkgo

2.  CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid)

3.  Niacin

4.  Fish Oil

Ginkgo is a wonderful supplement.

It is one of the top selling herbal supplements in the U. S.

It has a long running reputation for being known to enhance memory and a circulation booster.

But Ginkgo can DECREASE  the (diabetic prescription) drug’s effect causing it not to work as well as intended.

Resulting in the blood sugar to increase.  There was a study done at the University of Maryland Medical Center that concluded

that Ginkgo can lower insulin levels in people with diabetes.    Please consult with your healthcare provider.

CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) has become very popular lately with much credit due to The Dr. Oz Show!  He spoke highly about the use

of CLA in aiding in weight loss recently.  I’m all for losing weight, but if you are diabetic please speak to your doctor before

taking this supplement.  Some studies have shown that CLA actually raises your blood sugar by increasing insulin resistance.

Number 3 on the list is Niacin.  This supplement is great to take if you have cholesterol problems NOT problems with diabetes.

According to studies, niacin can lead to high blood sugar levels in the body.  It can interfere with the way your body uses insulin.

Talk to your doctor.

Last but not least is Fish Oil.  I hear people say “Fish oil is good for everything.”  It’s good for your eyes, brain, hair, skin, belly fat, cholesterol, etc….(Hey I love the stuff!!!)  My mom is diabetic and she LOVES her fish oil!  But she works very closely with her doctor and monitors her blood sugar levels often.  Studies are saying for diabetics to be careful and not take high doses (8 grams or more daily) of the supplement because it can raise blood sugar levels.  Check with your healthcare provider.
